After weeks of talks and speculation over whether a charity could be found to be the beneficiary of my new Running for oil – race against cancer campaign, I am pleased to announce that non-animal medical research charity, the Dr Hadwen Trust, has offered to accept the funds. The charity considers applications each year from independent scientists to conduct research into a diverse range of health issues including cancer.
The charity, founded in 1970 and backed by a host of celebrities including Brian May, Dame Judi Dench and Joanna Lumley, has already started a fund for research into cannabis and mental health. Applicants submitting research proposals relating to cannabis oil (or its derivatives) who pass the rigorous peer research review process may apply for grants.
I am grateful to the staff at the Dr Hadwen Trust (DHT) for giving me the opportunity to raise money which could (subject to the appropriate application being received) be used for humane cancer research into cannabis oil. The charity was my first choice for Running for oil right from the start. Ever since I discovered the DHT in 2008, I have admired the way they have shown that animals don’t need to suffer in the process of medical research, through the development of cutting edge methodologies. Their portfolio displays a solid track record in cancer research conducted by some of the UK’s leading scientists, and this gives me confidence that money raised will go towards funding the highest standard of cruelty-free medical research.
How it works
Applications will be assessed via a strict peer review process, and only those who meet the stringent criteria will be selected. Under consideration will be the proposed methodology and how it will help to replace animal experimentation in this area of research and the chances of the research leading to medical benefits or cures. It is worth once again highlighting that there is no guarantee of one or more matching projects materialising. Despite this, I very much hope that given the existing data on the medicinal benefits of cannabis oil, there will be no shortage of applicants.
The race takes place on Sunday April 7th 2013 and I hope you will consider donating what you can to the Dr Hadwen Trust.

About the Dr Hadwen Trust (from website)
The Dr Hadwen Trust awards grants to scientists in universities, hospitals and research organisations following a rigorous peer-reviewed selection procedure. Only those projects with the highest scientific calibre and the best potential for the replacement of animals will be awarded funding.
Funded solely by charitable donations, the DHT has awarded grants to over 140 research projects over 40 years for some of the most advanced and successful human-related techniques in the most diverse areas of medical research including cancer, Alzheimer’s, asthma, kidney, heart and liver disease and diabetes, to name only a few. To date, DHT continues to be the UK’s leading charity provider of grants solely dedicated to animal replacement research in medical research.
